Way Back When...Part V

Since I've come this far with our home renovations, let's keep going.
Our apartment was on the second floor, so therefore, we had a stairway leading up from ground level to upstairs. This lead directly into the living room. The hallway was all wood and was in desperate need of painting. We decided to tackle the wood first. All of the stairs, railings and window trim needed to be redone. Each step had to be individually including the risers. It was a lot of work and we ended up with a lot of dust on us. There were three landings as well. At the bottom where you walked in, in the middle to make the turn up into the apartment and at the top before you walked in. This project took at least three weeks to complete. After we did the first sanding, we vacuumed the entire area and went over everything again with a finer sanding to smooth everything over. Once that was done, we vacuumed again and then went over everything with a tacky cloth to get up the fine dust that might have remained. Once we were satisfied that the wood was cleaned properly, it was time to polyurethane all of the wood and the steps. The handrails and baseboard plus window were given two coats and the steps were given three as they were going to endure more wear and tear. In between each coat, we gave them a light sanding to break any bubbles that might have formed. By the time we were done, it really was such a dramatic improvement and was quite impressive despite only being a hallway.
New lighting was added that really accentuated the color we picked, which was yellow. The wood was somewhat dark, I think it was oak, and the polyurethane really brought out the dark aspects of it. The yellow really brightened it up as there was only one window. We put a blind on the window and added a valance. It had sort of a southwest theme. Kinda quirky but it seemed to fit. It was done.
Like I said, it took about three weeks, but it was well worth it. We had two areas done so far, the living room and the hallway. Still had a long way to go.
