Way Back When...Part VII
Hello Everyone,
In continuing with this story, we are moving on to the upstairs bathroom. It was definitely in need of remodeling. I am not a big fan of subway tile and the walls were covered with them in white. The floor had the black and white square tile, which I also do not like. We took out the toilet and tiny cabinet with sink. After we did that, we started taking the tile off of the walls. We had to be careful so as not to go through to the kitchen or bedroom on either side. We used small pry bars to peel them away from the walls. There were a lot of broken tiles to throw away. I can't begin to tell you how many boxes we needed to carry them all downstairs. Once we had the tile cleaned up, we started taking down the drywall. Of course, we couldn't just hammer at it. We had to turn the screws out and take the sheets off one by one. After the drywall came the tricky part. There was more of that steel screening halfway up the wall and behind the tub. Concrete was used to hold it in place. Fortunately, most of it was falling apart anyway. But the screening was so sharp and heavy, you had to be careful when pulling it out. We used heavy duty gloves and wore long sleeves and pants to keep from getting scratched or cut. It was a long process but we got it done.
The next part was putting the correct drywall back up. It had to be waterproof. It was basically stone and very heavy. It took a couple of us to hold it up so we could screw it onto the beams. We also had to do the ceiling as well. By this time, it was shaping up pretty nicely. We chose a nice white tile, big squares with blue and yellow accents. It really brightened it up since there wasn't a window. The floor tile was replaced with a nice marble. Before we did that, we had to replace the "O" ring for the toilet. We made sure it was seated well so that it did not crack the tile. Instead of putting tile all around the bathroom, we only did the shower area. The rest was done in a white wainscoting. We went halfway up the wall with it. The top half was done in a striped wallpaper that had blue, green and yellow. A border was added at the top that had a blue background with yellow sunflowers. It was very pretty.
The cabinet was replaced with slightly larger cabinet and new sink with faucet. Above it we installed a mirror with medicine cabinet. The lights above were also modern frosted globes to give it a warm glow. It had accented with blue towels and rugs to coordinate with the tile and wallpaper. We were very pleased with the outcome. The bathroom took about a month and a half to complete.
At this point, we only had the bedrooms to deal with. There were two just like downstairs. I'll get to those next time.
