Way Back When...Continued

To continue from yesterday...we decided we had to get the first floor of our new home ready for renters. Fortunately for us, the downstairs wasn't as bad as upstairs. Each apartment has two bedrooms. That was where we started. The bedrooms weren't too bad. We had to sand and refinish the floors. They looked like they hadn't been done in years. I should mention that all of the floors in the house were natural wood. Once the floors were finished and properly cured, we gave the bedrooms a good cleaning. The floor and window mouldings were also natural wood. Those also needed a light sanding and a fresh coat of polyurethane. After we had that complete, we gave the rooms a fresh coat of white paint, actually two. The walls were neglected as well. The ceilings were also painted freshly white.
Next, we moved onto the dining room and living room, both generously sized. They both needed floor sanding and a fresh coat of polyurethane. Same with the windows and mouldings. Even though it sounds like we did it rather quickly, it actually took a few weeks. The dining room wasn't too bad especially since we put in a new light fixture. Some of the fixtures in the apartment were, we believe, original to the house, but not in a good way. They weren't antiques, just old. The living room also had a screened in porch that you walked out into from French doors. We put new door handles on the French doors to update their look. It also had a front entrance doorway. The front door was in bad shape, so we replaced it along with the hardware. There was also a gas fireplace. It was made out of concrete but carved to look somewhat like stone. It was left white but I decided it might look better if I painted it. I used two colors and sponge-painted it. We told our renters not to use it (just because we didn't want any accidents and have our house burn down!). But, it looked nice just the same. With a fresh coat of white paint on the walls, the living room had shaped up nicely.
The front porch was a nice feature, although, it didn't have heat during the wintertime. But, it was a great place to hang out during the warmer months. It had windows all around so you could see the entire street. It was the only house on the block like that. And both apartments had the walk-out porch. We only had to clean it.
Those parts of the house were not the worst, it was the kitchen and bathroom. I will be glad to tell you about those next time.
